While we certainly recognize the allure of these "comfort" travel packages, if they keep you away from the great local restaurants outside their walls, then they are interfering with a major part of the allure of Tamarindo. If keeping a tight lid on your vacation budget is critical, try these tips.

  • Pay in the currency quoted on their Menu, or use a credit card.
  • Watch the prices of drinks, liquor and wine.
  • Eat a big breakfast.
  • Share a meal, or just desert.

A New Look at How to Cook Lobster

Katharina's labor of love as grown into a Tamarindo mainstay. El Coconut has a tranquile setting and unforgettable food. Most of the restaurant is outdoors, and the dark wood floors and walls fit into the Tico design aesthetic, and a cozy bar area is deal for a pre-meal cocktail or after-dinner glass of wine.

Restaurants in Guanacaste have the good fortune of having some of the world's best fresh seafood available on a daily basis. From marlin and mahi mahi to a multitude of shellfish, the variety of seafood you'll see across restaurant menus is mouth-watering.

Places to Eat Breakfast

Finding a restaurant for breakfast outside your hotel can be a little challenging. A big favorite is Noguis, but has closed every Wednesday since the American Revolution. We had a breakfast hangout called Jimmy's, before it was Gil's, now we just heard it was sold to someone else, but in the meantime, it burnt down! In the meantime, Gil re-opend at a place called Ursela's. You see what we mean!

The Only Bill That Never Seems to Come!

Wonder why they wait so long to prepare your bill? It is because here you must ask for it. If you want to speed up the process, a good practice is to ask for it when the food is served or at least after the desert, that way they can begin preparing. Also, most restaurants prepare the bill by hand, so give them extra time and check it.

How do you ask for your bill in Spanish? "Regaleme la cuenta, por favor!" Interestingly, the literal translation is "Please give me the gift of the bill." Get the waiters attention by establishing eye-contact and pretend to sign a bill on your hand.

What is the Local Dish?

The local dish is called a "casado" which iis a large plate of rice, beans, a vegetable serving, sweet planteno and your choice of beef chicken or fish. It can be just right for hungery surfers starving for carbs! It is not for dieters!

How Much Should You Tip?

Tipping Rules

In a constant pursuit of justice and in an attempt to Tamarindo as affordable, here are some tips on how to tip, and yet be fair with the employees. Just like many other countries, most of their income is drived by the money you leave on the table.

While colones and dollars are accepted most anywhere, anytime there is a conversion, you’re faced with someone pulling out a calculator and manually plugging in some made-up exchange rate. Being unregulated, almost always, it is below the rate which you would get at a bank or on your credit card. Not a big deal, until you find some businesses using an exchange rate, like 10% too low. Now your $18 breakfast for two is almost $20 in colones!

What are you’re options? Carry both colones and dollars, pay with a credit card, ask ahead of time for the conversion rate, or take your chances.

Most places automatically add a 10% service charge with your bill; this money is shared with the staff. If you want your a certain staff member to get an individual tip, you must leave it separately on top of the service charge. One day shake things up and leave a tip for the chef if you really like the way he cooks. This is not a common practice and will be the highlight of his day!

If you’re a tourist from the USA or Canada, you’re expected to tip in addition to the service fee. While I strongly encourage everyone to leave a tip, I’d refuse to add one for bad service. If your table setting and/or drinks arrive after your food, no tip!

Pay attention, get a coupon, pay only for what you get, and you may save as much as 30%. Actually, these suggestions also apply for other vacation expenditures. You could end up savings hundreds of dollars!
