Sail fishing in Tamarindo Costa Rica

Sportfishing

The waters in front of Tamarindo Costa Rica are the primary fishing grounds for the northwest Pacific coast sportfishing fleet. It faces a major shore-ward sweep of the continental shelf and the 100 and 1000 fathom lines. For this reason the run time to deep, blue-water fishing (10-30 min.) is less than that of other locations. Although we have excellent fishing year 'round, our peak seasons are April-August and November-March.

There is no particular "season" as regards what species are available. For instance, September and October can generally be the height of the rainy season, yet we often experience superb fishing during these months. All species mentioned above and more may be caught at any time of year.

Roosterfish - A Fish to Crow About

Suddenly an army moved in! With dorsal fins of combs cutting the surface on top of  zebra-striped bodies, a school of roosterfish attacked the school of sardines. The sudden attack sent them in a panic! Seconds later, a group of sea birds sensed the opportunity and joined the assault.

Roosterfish are the wolves of the western tropical Pacific waters. They roam the inshore waters, near the coasts and in the gulfs, normally hunting solo. Found only beteen southern Mexico and Escador, roosterfish can be found year-round in the area.

Named after their rooster-like seven-point combed dorsal fin, the average size is about 20 pounds. 50 pound fish are also common, and occasionall, a fish over 75 pounds surprises a happy angler. How do you catcha roosterfish?

They are dub as a rock to live bait, but leery of artificial poppers, and it is extremely difficult to get them to eat a fly. They hunt close to shore, and if you catch one be sure to release it because they are very tough and have a high survival rate.
