Tamarindo Costa Rica - the Destination

Tamarindo Costa Rica is a beach town on the northwestern coast of Costa Rica in the Province of Guanacaste, and conveniently located on the beach and nearby many major tourism attractions. In addition, it is within 20-30-minutes away from other interesting beach towns, each with it's own charm. It's a perfect destination for those wanting a centrally located beach that reduces vacation driving time. During the winter season, Tamarindo has the warm, dry weather for those wanting to thaw out. It has beautiful beaches are the perfect answer for cold winters.

Even though Tamarindo is a known travel hub location in Costa Rica, it is still a small town that actually has only three commercial streets! Because the surrounding towns are even smaller, you might call it the "largest of the small towns." Here one can walk most anywhere, and many visitors and even some residents, don't even rent or own a car! In spite of its small size, it's still one of the most vibrant, colorful and creative towns in Costa Rica. It's unique, fun, exotic and free-spirited that makes one feel they've traveled somewhere really different. It has a blend of native people, international residents and visitors from around the world, all here to get away as they mentally and physically escape into a small town.

Featured in the Movies!

Every since it was featured in the classic surfing movie, "Endless Summer II", Tamarindo has been a "can't miss" vacation destination in Costa Rica. Since then, it has grown into the largest of the small towns, and just the right size for those wanting to stay in a small town, but still have plenty of activities.  Depending on your viewpoint, Tamarindo Costa Rica could seem larger because, if you include the surrounding towns the number of available accommodations jumps to the thousands. Of course, there are all kinds of accommodations from small hotels  to luxury all inclusive.

Ops! What happened to Tamarindo's Blue Flag Award!

The Blue Flag is a prestige awarded to beach communities whose´s coastal waters have been shown to be safe for swimming. Beaches are tested and those who pass are eligible to display the award. While Tamarindo passed the test there was just one catch... No one in town ever applied for it! I guess one could understand this happening when you have a town with no mayor, official government, or Chamber of Commerce. Here is the latest information on water quality in the Tamarindo Area, and its good news for everyone.

Exchanging Money

Nice little video about the money system in Costa Rica.

The exchange rate is now about 570 colones per $ Dlr. At smaller establishments it is a good idea to ask for their exchange rate before making a purchase.

Tamarindo's beginning

In the beginning Tamarindo was just a very small fishing town where local native people went to the beach on holidays. Tamarindo only really became famous after it was featured in a 60s surfing cult film classic. Robert August is a two-time world surfing champion. It is about surfers who travel the world for a full year looking for the "perfect wave." and Tamarindo was one of their stops. The name of this important surf classic is "Endless Summer II" and here is a link to see a clip of the movie where Robert August and friends surfed Tamarindo. In the clip, you'll see how some places looked some 45 years ago in Tamarindo.

Holidays

Businesses close during a holiday, except those involved in essential services and tourism. The most celebrated holidays and the ones that can cause the most serious disruption in your travel plans are Easter Holy Week and Christmas when the entire country essentially closes down.

During Easter Week even buses stop running on Holy Thursday and Good Friday. Banks and offices are closed. Hotels and car rentals are booked solid weeks in advance as everyone seems to head for the beach and the days before and just after the official holiday become unofficial holidays.

Easter Week is a good time to get out and visit a real Tico town and watch or even take part in colorful religious events while each town celebrates their patron saint. Highlights often include a procession, bull riding, rodeos, dances and other parades.
